Marvin Lowell Merchen, son of Fred and Leona (Karlin) Merchen, was born September 21, 1928 in White River, S.D. He was baptized and confirmed in Norris, S.D. Marvin attended country school in Mellette County and went to White River for three years of high school before moving with his family to Bloomfield, Neb., for his senior year. He married Marilyn Jean Schulz on September 6, 1950, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield.
Marvin spent many years farming in Pierce and Knox counties, and later worked for Hesse’s Implement in Crofton. Marvin was a great neighbor and friend, helping anyone who needed a hand and sharing a good story with everyone who stopped for coffee, desserts and a chat. He raised fine crops, good livestock and a bunch of pretty good kids – which he considered his greatest accomplishment. In retirement, Marvin and Marilyn moved to Yankton where they spent some time in the kindness and tender care of Avera Sister James staff at Majestic Bluffs.
Left to mourn are his children: Deborah (Robert) Oleson of Steen, Minnesota; Yvonne Moody of Chadron, Nebraska; Paulette (Chuck) Schmidt of Crofton, Nebraska; Rod (Jean) Merchen of Yankton; Rhonda (Beth Hanson) Merchen of Yankton; and Stacy (Patrick) Chedester of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; 12 grandchildren: Christina Oleson and Scott Oleson, Kent (Valerie) Moody, Karlin (Chuck Mader) Moody, Paul Schmidt and Kyle (Cara) Schmidt, Matt Merchen, Tim Merchen, and Max, Madison, Olivia and Maria Chedester; and two great-grandchildren: Kody and Julia Schmidt. Marvin is also survived by siblings: Joyce (Myron) Frevert, Rose Marie Kolar, Alice June (Donald) Gilsdorf, Fern (Roger) Nohr, JoAnn (Al) Kuper, Connie (Norman) Rentschler, and Neal (Gloria) Merchen; and in-laws: Donald (Shirley) Schulz, Eunice Kauth, Frank (Janice) Schulz, Arleen Brunken and Paul (Taylor) Reudi.
Marilyn preceded Marvin in the journey to heaven along with Marvin’s parents, Fred and Leona Merchen; mother and father-in-law, Ernst and Anna Schulz; son-in-law, George Moody; and three brothers-in-law: Francis Kolar, Walt Kauth, and Norman Brunken.
Marvin’s kindness and humor will be missed by all who knew him. He always appreciated the visits and time shared with family and friends, and even a few strangers. Remember, life is short, don’t hesitate to say “I love you” and eat dessert first!
