Viola Hanson

Viola Mae (Smith) Hanson, 89, of Carter, S.D., passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the Avera Gregory Hospital in Gregory, S.D.  Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Mason Funeral Home in Winner, S.D.  Burial will follow in the Winner City Cemetery in Winner, S.D.  There will be a visitation held one hour prior to the funeral on Friday, May 3, 2013, at the Mason Funeral Home.

Viola was born to Virgil and Iva May (Carlson) Smith on April 07, 1924, in Valentine Nebraska.

The family later moved to Winner where she went to school up to the 8th grade.  After which she did some babysitting for families in the town of Winner.

Later Viola went to work as a waitress at Ella’s Café and also at the Peacock Café, back in the days, as they were known.

Viola met her true love James Ervin Hanson, and on March 9, 1946, they were united in marriage.  To this union four children were born; Kenneth of North Carolina, Earl of Carter, S.D., and two who have passed away: David and Candace.

Viola loved to cook for her family or anybody that showed up around noon, which was quite often.  She was well known for her homemade bread and rolls of all kinds, but especially her homemade gravy.  Everyone was always welcome to have coffee and rolls when they stopped to visit.

Viola is survived by her two sons Kenneth L. Hanson of North Carolina and Earl Hanson of Carter, South Dakota; and a very special daughter-in-law Robin.  She is also survived by 3 grandsons, 3 granddaughters, 3 great grandsons, 4 great granddaughters, 2 brothers: Roland Smith of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Carl (Bill) Smith of Coos Bay, Oregon; 1 sister Martha Burkinshaw of Apache Junction, Ariz.; and many other friends and relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband James Ervin Hanson of 67 years, her parents, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, 1 son, 1 daughter, 1 granddaughter, 1 grandson, and 1 great granddaughter.
