White River’s hopes of an undefeated regular season blew away in the wind Thursday night as the Cowboys of Colome outplayed the Tigers 28-22.
The final regular season game of the year was played in Colome October 18 on a day when sustained winds regularly measured in the 45 mph range. The windy conditions left both teams limited in their play calling and, for the most part, eliminated passing and kicking.
Defense ruled in quarter one. The Tigers forced a fumble with Colome threatening in the red zone on a 4th down try. The Cowboys sacked White River quarterback Wyatt Krogman early in the period on a pair of 4th down tries on back to back possessions.
The offense came in the second quarter. Rated #2 in Class 9B, Colome scored first just seconds into period two on an 8 yard run. They led 8-0 after a successful two point conversion. Just a minute later, White River countered with a long touchdown run by Krogman. A 2 point pass to Nic Waln left the score tied at 8.
Colome’s next possession erased more than seven minutes off the clock and ended in the endzone on a 10 yard run and extra points that made the score 16-8 with 2:35 remaining in the half. Working against the clock to score before intermission, the Tigers were awarded a pair of 1st downs, the result of Colome penalties, and Krogman ran for another. With four seconds remaining, the Tigers, on the 20 yard line, faced a fourth down and one. A pass to Nic Waln in the endzone went incomplete and the score remained 16-8.
An exciting second half got started with the Tigers turning the ball over after an unsuccessful 4th down and 7 try gave Colome the ball on the WR 28 yard line. The Cowboys took advantage of the good field position, adding to their lead with another touchdown.
Trailing by 14, the Tigers responded with their best drive of the night, marching 80 yards up-field. A touchdown by Waln made it a one possession game, 14-22. Tiger special teams came up with a big play on the kick-off when they recovered an onside kick. A 15 yard pass to Tré Iyotte put the Tigers in good position, though they still faced a 4th and 3. A pitch to Gilbert Morrison on the play that followed resulted in a 20 yard touchdown run and after Krogman made his way across the goal line for the 2 point conversion, the game was tied.
Both teams played hard through the fourth period, working to gain the advantage. Defense, though, seemed to prevail. The Tigers got fourth down stops to end Colome’s early possessions. The Cowboys forced White River into the game’s only punt.
With just over two and a half minutes remaining, a Tiger run on 4th and 3 came up just short and Colome regained possession on the WR 44 yard line. They came up with a 20 yard pass completion on 4th down and 8, allowing their drive to the endzone to continue. They later converted on another 4th down try and the next play found the endzone, a 4 yard run.
The Tigers made a good return on the kick-off but had only 8 seconds remaining on the game clock. They got off a couple of plays, but a pass near the endzone as time expired fell incomplete, and the Cowboys took the win, 28-22.
Both teams finished the season with a record of 7-1.
